The Problem of Acidic Rain

In many of our lakes and streams, plant and animal life has been choked off by acid rain-rain containing nitrogen and sulfur oxides discharged from motor vehicles and coal burning power plants and factories. Rising upward into the atmosphere, these pollutants circulate, react with moisture, and turn into nitric and sulfuric acids, which eventually fall back to earth-in rain or snow that is as acidic as lemon juice or vinegar. Unfortunately, many of the towering industrial smokestacks that were designed to minimize local pollution have apparently acted to increase acid rain. They inject the pollutants higher into the atmosphere, which makes it easier for acidic compounds to form. The effect of acid rain on humans is still unclear, but acid sulfate particles-bits of “acid dust” that float down independent of rain, snow, and sleet-are believed to contribute to a number of respiratory elements.

I have experience of this acidic rain, when the industry near of our workplace expel SO 2  gas to the atmosphere, immediately the rice field around that industry become yellow and died, SO 2  gas sometime directly down when the whether wet or when the rain come. SO2 absorb by water become H 2 SO 4 , a sulfuric acid same as the acid use in car battery.SO2 gas from the smokestack have very bad effect to the atmosphere, if they don't down at that time they will accumulate in the atmosphere and will absorb by vapor and react become sulfuric acid.
